Towards an Objective Film Criticism

The history of film criticism is that of a late developer. It hardly seemed appropriate to spill ink in discussing the actualities1 of primitive short films in the early days. Although serious writing about films began on some sort of regular basis in the teens of this century, it received its first real injection of vigour from the writings of the Russian theorists and directors, Eisenstein and Pudovkin. These great directors also wrote a great deal on their theories of film aesthetics. Not long before this time, in the twenties, regular film columns began to appear in newspapers and magazines, becoming almost universal in the thirties. It is curious that reviewing and criticism seem to have developed at about the same time. The distinction is an easy one to make, and to overlook: the aim of reviewing is to provide promptly a reasoned answer to the question of whether the film is worth seeing or not; the aim of criticism is to evaluate the film by more rigorous standards, by some more interesting test. The critic tries to explain wherein the merit of the good film lies, and why the flawed film is flawed.
